The Perth Citizen’s Band

Artist Bio

Perth Citizens’ Band is Canada’s oldest continuously operating community band, the Perth Citizens’ Band has been an enduring symbol of civic pride and musical tradition since 1852. Deeply woven into the cultural fabric of the Town of Perth and Lanark County, the band’s legacy is captured in *Sound the Trumpet*, a historical account by local archivist Daphne Overhill.

From its home base in the historic Perth Town Hall, the band rehearses weekly, bringing together musicians of all ages and skill levels—from enthusiastic teens to seasoned professionals. Under the direction of longtime conductor and educator Brian Tackaberry, the 50-member ensemble explores an eclectic repertoire spanning classical greats, Big Band swing, Broadway hits, classic rock, and modern compositions.

The Perth Citizens’ Band performs at a wide array of local events throughout the year, including community parades, church services, and school concerts, and is especially known for its beloved summer concert series at the Stewart Park bandstand. Signature annual performances include the festive Christmas Concert and the rousing *Last Night at the Proms*. Their musical journey has taken them from Perth’s own Mammoth Cheese send-off to Toronto’s Bicentennial celebrations and even the Governor General’s Garden Party at Rideau Hall.

More than a musical group, the band is a multigenerational community hub where friendships flourish and families play side by side. With its enduring spirit and commitment to volunteerism, the Perth Citizens’ Band continues to make history—one note at a time.
